What the digits after 02 tell you
Landline numbers in Australia have eight digits after the area code and are written (02) 1234 5678. In the 02 area the first digit of those eight points to the region. Numbers starting 02 9, 02 8 and 02 7 are in Sydney, 02 4 covers Newcastle, Wollongong and the Central Coast, and 02 6 covers Canberra and parts of inland New South Wales.
From overseas you drop the 0 and dial +61 2 followed by the eight digits.
Is a call from 02 a scam?
Not by itself. 02 is used by banks, hospitals, councils and millions of households. Scam calls use it only because a local-looking number is more likely to be answered. If someone claiming to be from your bank, the tax office or your internet provider asks you to move money, share a code or install software, hang up and ring the organisation back on an official number.
You can report scams to Scamwatch at scamwatch.gov.au, and add your number to the Do Not Call Register at donotcall.gov.au.
Time zone
New South Wales and the ACT use Australian Eastern Standard Time, which is UTC+10, and move to UTC+11 for daylight saving between October and April. That means a 02 caller is one hour ahead of Brisbane for part of the year.
Does the area code show where the caller is?
Not reliably. Scammers and call centers use spoofing to display a local area code because people are more likely to answer. People also keep their number when they move, so a 02 number can belong to someone anywhere.
That is why the full number matters more than the code. If someone has already reported it, you will see it below.
