How it works

Three checks before you call back

  1. 1

    Look up the number

    Type it in any format: (305) 555-0123, 305-555-0123 or +1 305 555 0123.

  2. 2

    Read the signals

The area code location, the risk level and reports from other people show what kind of call it was.

  3. 3

    Block or report

Block the number on your phone, then tell us what happened so the next person sees the pattern.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Who is calling me from an unknown number?

Type the number into the search box. We show the area code location and what other people have reported about the caller. The area code tells you where the number was assigned, not who is using it today.

Is it free to look up a phone number?

Yes. Searching is free and needs no sign-up. You can also add your own report after a call.

How do I find out who texted me?

Search the sender's number. If the text looks like a scam, do not tap any link. Forward it to 7726 (SPAM), which works on the major US carriers, then delete it.

Can a scammer fake a local area code?

Yes. Caller ID spoofing lets a caller display almost any number, which is why scam calls often appear to come from your own area code. Judge the call by what is asked of you, not by the number on the screen.

How do I stop robocalls?

Add your number to the National Do Not Call Registry at donotcall.gov (free), turn on the spam filter your carrier offers, and block repeat callers on your phone. Registering does not stop scammers, but it makes illegal sales calls easier to report.

Where do I report a scam call?

Report it to the Federal Trade Commission at reportfraud.ftc.gov. Unwanted robocalls can also be reported to the FCC.
