Questions
Frequently asked questions
Who is calling me from an unknown number?
Type the number into the search box. We show the area or number range it belongs to and what other people have reported. The prefix shows how the number was issued, not who is using it today.
Is it free to look up an Australian phone number?
Yes. Searching is free and needs no sign-up. You can also add your own report after a call.
Who sent me this text?
Search the sender's number. If a text claims to be from Australia Post, myGov, a toll operator or your bank, do not tap the link. You can forward spam texts to 0429 999 888 and report scams at scamwatch.gov.au.
Why did a number ring once and stop?
Short calls that hang up before you answer, often from overseas numbers, are designed to make you call back. Do not return a missed call from a number you do not know without checking it first.
How do I stop unwanted calls in Australia?
Add your number to the Do Not Call Register at donotcall.gov.au (free), block repeat numbers and report scams to Scamwatch. Registering does not stop scammers, but it makes illegal marketing calls reportable.
Can I search an Australian number from overseas?
Yes. Enter it with the leading 0, such as 02 1234 5678, or in international form such as +61 2 1234 5678. We treat both the same way.
