13 numbers: who called me?
Charged at the local call rate
13 xx xx numbers are six-digit Australian local-rate numbers used by large businesses and government agencies.
What 13 numbers are
Numbers such as 13 12 34 have only six digits. They are charged as a local call from a landline, and some are held by well-known organisations. They can be routed to different call centres depending on where you ring from.
Because the numbers are short and memorable, they are valuable, and scam callers sometimes try to copy the look of them on caller ID.
Checking a 13 number
If a message or call tells you to ring a six-digit 13 number you do not recognise, look up the exact number first. Real organisations publish theirs on their own websites, and you can compare what you were given.
