646 is an overlay area code for Manhattan, introduced in 1999 to add numbers to the area served by 212.
Manhattan overlay
646 covers the same territory as 212 and 332, so Manhattan numbers can start with any of the three. It is on Eastern time and ten-digit dialing is required.
Mobile numbers and virtual office numbers are widespread in 646, so a call from this code does not mean the person is on the island. Always judge the call by what it asks you to do.
Scams reported in Manhattan
Fake job offers and apartment listings are common in New York, as are requests to send money through apps such as Zelle to protect your account. Your bank will never ask you to move money to keep it safe.
Many small businesses and start-ups use 646 numbers, so a genuine call from this code is common. Judge a caller by what they ask for rather than by the number.
Does the area code show where the caller is?
Not reliably. Scammers and call centers use spoofing to display a local area code because people are more likely to answer. People also keep their number when they move, so a 646 number can belong to someone anywhere.
That is why the full number matters more than the code. If someone has already reported it, you will see it below.
