202 is the area code for Washington, D.C. It is one of the original 1947 codes and has never been divided.
Washington, D.C.
The code covers the District of Columbia and is on Eastern time. Neighbouring areas in Maryland and Virginia use other codes, such as 301, 240, 703 and 571.
A 202 number may be from a government office, a lobbying firm, a contractor or a private individual. Scammers also like it because it looks official, and callers claiming to be from a federal agency and demanding payment by gift card or wire are always scams.
Government impostors and political calls
Callers who claim to be from Social Security, the FBI or another federal agency are one of the most common impostor types, and they often use a Washington number. A real agency does not threaten arrest by phone or accept gift cards.
Political and charity calls are not covered by the National Do Not Call Registry, although the rules on prerecorded calls to cell phones still apply. That is why you may keep receiving campaign calls even after registering.
Does the area code show where the caller is?
Not reliably. Scammers and call centers use spoofing to display a local area code because people are more likely to answer. People also keep their number when they move, so a 202 number can belong to someone anywhere.
That is why the full number matters more than the code. If someone has already reported it, you will see it below.
