056 numbers
Charged at geographic rate or similar
Location independent numbers used by internet telephony services.
Calls to this range are billed as two parts: an access charge set by your own provider, plus a service charge set by the organisation you are calling. Adverts must quote both.
056 numbers are UK numbers that do not belong to a place. They are used mainly by internet-based phone services, so the caller could be anywhere.
What are 056 numbers?
056 numbers were created for internet-based voice services that are not tied to a specific location. They are charged like geographic numbers, so you should not pay more to call them.
How to treat an unknown 056 call?
Because the numbers do not show where a caller is, they are easy for call centres and scammers to use. If an 056 caller asks for payment, remote access to your computer or personal information, hang up. Look up the organisation yourself and call it back on a number you have found independently.
