070 personal numbers

Often mistaken for a mobile, usually far more expensive

Personal numbers that forward to another line. They look like a mobile number but are not one, and calls can cost significantly more.

Calls to this range are billed as two parts: an access charge set by your own provider, plus a service charge set by the organisation you are calling. Adverts must quote both.

070 numbers look a lot like mobile numbers but are 'personal numbers' that forward calls elsewhere, and they can be far more expensive to ring. Check an 070 number before you call it back.

Is an 070 number a mobile?

No. Mobile numbers start 071 to 075 and 077 to 079. Numbers starting 070 are personal numbers: they forward calls to another phone and keep the owner's real number private. Because they look like mobile numbers, many people assume the call will cost the same as ringing a mobile, which is not true.

Why can 070 calls cost so much?

Calls to 070 numbers can be much more expensive than calls to mobiles, and are not covered by inclusive minutes. Check your provider's price guide for the current rate before you ring one.

070 and missed-call scams

Unknown 070 numbers are sometimes used to leave a missed call and tempt you into calling back. If an 070 number rings once and stops, do not return the call without checking it.

  • Do not give out passcodes, PINs or full card details to someone who rang you.
  • Hang up and call the organisation back on the number printed on your card, bill or its official website.
  • Ask your phone provider about barring calls to 070 numbers if you do not need them.
