090 premium rate numbers

Premium rate, up to 300p per minute
Ofcom caps the service charge at 300p per minute or 500p per call excluding VAT.

Premium rate services. Ofcom allows a service charge of up to 300 pence per minute or 500 pence per call, excluding VAT.

Calls to this range are billed as two parts: an access charge set by your own provider, plus a service charge set by the organisation you are calling. Adverts must quote both.

Numbers starting 09 are premium rate. Charges can be high from the first second, and Ofcom and the Phone-paid Services Authority set the rules. Never call back an 09 number you do not recognise.

How much does an 09 call cost?

Premium-rate services charge per minute or per call, and the price is set by the service provider within the limits set by regulators. Providers must state the price clearly in any advert, and the charge usually starts as soon as the call connects. Your phone provider adds its own access charge as well.

What are 09 numbers used for?

Competitions, TV voting, chat services, psychic and astrology lines and some adult services. They are legal but expensive, and they are a favourite hook for missed-call scams.

You got a missed call from an 09 number

Do not call back. Scammers ring and hang up so that you call a premium-rate line and run up a bill. If you have already called, check your next bill, contact your provider, and complain to the Phone-paid Services Authority if you think the service was misleading.

  • Do not give out passcodes, PINs or full card details to someone who rang you.
  • Hang up and call the organisation back on the number printed on your card, bill or its official website.
  • Ask your provider to bar premium-rate numbers if you never use them.
