Got a call from a 01872 number?
A 01872 number tells you roughly where a line is registered, not who is calling. Scammers can spoof any UK number, including local ones, so never rely on the area code alone to judge a caller.
If the caller asks for a PIN, a one-time passcode, remote access to your computer or an urgent payment, hang up and call the organisation back on the number printed on your card or bill. To reduce sales calls, register with the Telephone Preference Service, and report scams to Report Fraud (reportfraud.police.uk, formerly Action Fraud) or by forwarding a text to 7726. Search the full number on this site to see what other people have reported.
Does the code tell you where the caller is?
Not reliably. Modern phone systems let any business display any UK dialling code, and call centres often pick a regional code so the call looks local and you pick up. The code tells you where the line was registered, not where the person sits.
That is why the individual number matters more than the code. If someone has already reported it, you will see it below.
