08 numbers: who called me?

08x numbers are Irish mobile numbers, starting 083, 085, 086, 087 or 089.
What the digits tell you
Mobile numbers are written like 087 123 4567. The prefixes were originally allocated to particular networks, but because people can keep their number when they switch provider, the prefix does not show who runs the line today.
From abroad you drop the 0 and dial +353 87. A mobile number can belong to a person, a small business or a bulk-messaging service, so an unknown 08x caller tells you little by number alone.
Texts from unknown numbers
Texts that pretend to be from a family member with a new number, from An Post or from your bank are common. Do not send money, and do not tap links in messages you were not expecting. Check with the person or company on a number you already have.
