727 is the area code for Pinellas County, Florida, which includes St. Petersburg, Clearwater and Largo.
The Pinellas peninsula
727 was created in 1998 when Pinellas County was divided from 813. The county is a peninsula between Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico and is on Eastern time.
Many people move between Pinellas and Tampa daily for work, so a 727 caller may just as easily be a Tampa employer as a local resident. Do not assume that a local-looking number means a local caller.
Is 727 a scam area code?
No. 727 is the Pinellas County code, covering beach towns, St. Petersburg and Clearwater.
Pinellas is the most densely populated county in Florida and has many retirees, which is why Medicare, bank and grandparent-in-trouble calls are commonly reported. In a grandparent scam, a caller pretends to be a relative who needs bail or medical money. Hang up and phone the relative directly, or ask a question only they could answer.
Does the area code show where the caller is?
Not reliably. Scammers and call centers use spoofing to display a local area code because people are more likely to answer. People also keep their number when they move, so a 727 number can belong to someone anywhere.
That is why the full number matters more than the code. If someone has already reported it, you will see it below.
