800 numbers: who called me?
Free to call
800 numbers are toll-free in Canada and the United States. The business, not the caller, pays for the call.
What are 800 numbers?
800 is one of the toll-free prefixes (800, 833, 844, 855, 866, 877 and 888). They are free to call from most Canadian phones.
Banks, airlines, retailers and government agencies use toll-free numbers, but so do some scammers and telemarketers.
How to judge a toll-free call
The oldest toll-free prefix is usually held by long-established companies, but a toll-free number alone is no proof the caller is legitimate.
