Amazon scam calls: Prime subscription and fraud alerts

Updated

A typical scam call begins with a recorded voice: “Your Amazon Prime subscription is about to renew for £79.99. Press 1 to cancel.” If you press 1 you are put through to a person, who may ask you to download remote-access software to “refund” you. They then use that access to empty your bank account.

How to protect yourself

  • Amazon does not call to ask for payment details or ask you to install software.
  • If you are worried, open the Amazon app or website yourself and check Your Account and Your Orders. Do not use a link or number from the call.
  • Hang up and do not press any buttons. Delete texts and do not call back.

If you have already acted

Contact your bank immediately. If you let someone use remote access, turn off the computer, disconnect it from the internet and get it checked. Change your passwords from a different device. Report the call to Report Fraud and forward any texts to 7726.
