The Telephone Preference Service: how to stop sales calls

Updated

The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) is a free register. Once your number is on it, companies are legally not allowed to make unsolicited sales and marketing calls to you.

How to register

You can register on tps.org.uk or by calling 0345 070 0707. It is free and covers landlines and mobiles. It can take up to 28 days to take effect.

What the TPS will not stop

  • Scammers, who ignore the law.
  • Calls you have agreed to, such as from a company you gave permission to.
  • Charities, surveys and political calls, which are not always covered.

If calls continue

After 28 days, complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office with the company name and number, if known. Keep a note of the date and time. A call blocker or phone settings can help reduce the rest.
