BT and Openreach scam calls explained
Updated
One long-running scam involves callers who say they are from BT or Openreach. They tell you your internet has been hacked or will be disconnected, and ask you to press a key, give your details or let them access your computer.
What BT and Openreach will not do
- They will not cold-call you to say your service is about to be cut off for a security issue.
- They will not ask for your bank PIN, passwords or remote access to your computer.
- Openreach engineers do not take payments; they deal with the line, not your bill.
How to respond
Hang up. If you want to check your account, contact your provider using a number from a recent bill or the official website. Use your phone company’s call-blocking tools; BT customers can use BT Call Protect. Report the call to Report Fraud or forward texts to 7726.
