A bank is calling: how to check using 159

Updated

Fraudsters often impersonate banks. They may say your account is under attack and ask you to move money to a “safe account”. A real bank would never ask you to do that.

What is 159?

159 is a short number that connects you to many of the UK’s main banks. If you receive a call, text or email that says it is from your bank and you are not sure, hang up and dial 159. The service then asks you to choose your bank and puts you through to the official team.

Rules to remember

  • Your bank will never ask for your full PIN or password.
  • It will never ask you to transfer money to another account.
  • It will never ask you to install software on your device.

If you gave details or moved money, call your bank straight away and report it to Report Fraud.
