How to find out who is calling you in the UK
Updated
An unknown number is not always a scam, but it is worth checking before you call back. Here is how to do it safely.
Steps
- Search the full number on this site and read what others have reported.
- Look at the type: a mobile number, a regional landline, or a non-geographic number such as 0800 or 03.
- Check if the number matches a company’s published phone number on its official website.
- Wait for a voicemail. Genuine callers usually leave a message.
Do not
- Do not ring back numbers that rang once and cut off.
- Do not click links in texts from numbers you do not know.
- Do not give out passwords, one-time codes or bank details.
To reduce unwanted calls, register with the Telephone Preference Service and block repeat numbers on your phone.
